Acoustic room in the Gasometer, Oberhausen
Special Acoustic Award at the 14th Rigips Trophy
The Gasometer in Oberhausen was the largest operational disc gas container in Europe until 1988. Today, this industrial monument, which stands at over 117 metres tall, is Europe's tallest exhibition hall. As part of the"Planet Ocean" exhibition, construction company J. Brinkmann was commissioned to build a round, highly soundproofed, multifunctional acoustic room using drywall construction for the immersive sound installation "Sound of the Depths". This required an almost soundproof visitor room to be integrated into the load-bearing structure of the heritage-protected gas pressure container disc, with additional wall reinforcement to support exhibition displays. Due to heritage protection regulations, the standard fastening of wall and ceiling connections was not possible, as the residue-free removal of the constructed elements had to be guaranteed. In coordination with the architect, fire protection officers and Rigips technicians, all requirements (fire protection, soundproofing and fastening options) were met by using wall constructions based on Rigips Habito solid drywall boards. The lateral wall connections were fixed to the steel supports using adhesive technology and were additionally braced and foam-filled along the full wall height to ensure stability. The lateral wall joints were sealed airtight with adhesive tape. The wall head connection was carried out by finishing professionals as a pressure component and the cavity between the upper profile (UA profile) and the heritage-protected steel gas pressure disc was tightly filled with insulation material. The expansion joint between the room ceiling (steel disc) and the wall cladding was sealed with special compression tape. High cleanliness standards were also required on the construction site, as exhibition exhibits were being set up at the same time as construction work was taking place.
