Winner in the Culture, Education, and Leisure Category at the 14th Rigips Trophy

With a floor area of 10,000 m², the Kunstpalast Museum is one of the most important cultural institutions in the Rhineland. Located on the banks of the Rhine in Düsseldorf, the museum was built in 1913 and has undergone several remodellings over the years. After closing for three years for extensive modernisation and renovation work, the listed building reopened in November 2023. The 5,000 m² exhibition space has been completely redesigned in terms of both space and concept. The interior construction was carried out in its entirety by Ruben Peter Ausbau GmbH from Floh-Seligenthal in southwestern Thuringia. One of the numerous challenges for the drywall professionals was constructing narrow, up to six-metre-high facing shells or walls according to static specifications with the highest flatness and surface quality requirements. Another demanding task was constructing installation walls with a very high load-bearing capacity and ventilated shadow gaps at the base. These walls were designed to be partially walkable and accommodate built-in components, such as fire extinguishers and pictograms. The interior construction experts also created a special ventilated shed roof with indirect lighting behind the shadow gap. A steel structure provides additional reinforcement. Each ceiling board had to be custom-made for installation, as complex components such as the ventilation system significantly affected the symmetry of the ceilings. The handcrafted revision boards also required a great deal of time. The difficult lighting conditions demanded the utmost care in surface treatment.
