Hyparschale, Templin
Nominee in the category Culture, Education, Leisure at the 14th Rigips Trophy
The Hyparschale in Templin used to be a restaurant with a nightclub. Designed by the structural engineer Ulrich Müther, the striking building was constructed between 1968 and 1972. With a floor area of around 3,300 m², it is an engineering masterpiece and is therefore listed as a historic monument. The recent renovation, completed by Möbel Damm GmbH, focused on preserving the existing structure in accordance with monument protection requirements, as well as making appropriate additions to the new construction. Today, a day care centre occupies the annexe and parts of the existing building. The remaining part has been converted into office spaces for the city administration and a restaurant. The restaurant occupies most of the basement, so the existing ceilings had to be reinforced to F 60 standards. In addition to meeting monument protection requirements, the interior spaces were designed to be filled with natural light via various skylights. To this end, different bending moulds were created as press forms. This enabled the pre-bent plasterboard to be mounted onto the prefabricated substructure of the dome. The pre-assembled structure was transported to the designated position using a forklift truck and then fixed to the solid ceiling. Numerous rounded transitions were requested for the daycare centre's hallways and washrooms. The Rigips Glasroc X boards used for the curves were also bent using the moulds created by the interior specialists from Templin. Möbel Damm GmbH demonstrated great attention to detail in designing the daycare centre's wash area to resemble a "forest with real trees". Trees selected specifically for the space were stripped of their bark and integrated into gypsum board frames.
