Villa Michels, Andernach
Special Award for Drywall at the 14th Rigips Trophy
The Villa Michels was built in the neo-baroque style between 1893 and 1897 for the industrialist Franz Xaver Michels and his wife Maria. This impressive building, with its tuff stone façade and concave mansard roof, was used as a residence for entertaining guests. Even back then, the family's natural stone business offices were located in the adjacent building. Following extensive renovations in recent years, the villa and its park-like garden, located directly on the banks of the Rhine, are now available for events. The conversion of the nearly 400 m² attic, complete with a rounded mansard roof, marked the completion of this demanding and high-quality renovation project. The convex mansard surfaces of the building dominate the rooms arranged around the central hallway, coffee kitchen and WC. These rooms are bright and flooded with light thanks to the dormer and roof windows. These demanded the highest standards of surface quality, sharp-edged design of all offsets, dormer cladding and integration of support beams with head braces intersecting the mansard surfaces at an angle. The connection of the partition walls, including the creation of a sliding connection to the upper roof surfaces and adaptation to the curvature of the mansard surfaces, also required great craftsmanship. Cladding the large, curved dormer windows was particularly challenging and time-consuming. The production and connection of the reveals of the smaller dormers to the curvature of the mansard surfaces were hardly less complex. The expansion professionals from Neuwied were responsible for cladding the dormers in the attic of the villa, adapting them to the curves, as well as for the fire wall to the staircase, the stud walls and the cladding of the mansard and roof surfaces.
