Kaiserlofts, Wilhelmshaven

The development of the city of Wilhelmshaven has been closely linked to the German Navy, both historically and in the present day. A testament to this history is the former Imperial Navy Clothing Office. From sailor suits to captain's uniforms, this was once where entire ship crews were kitted out. This is how the building got its popular nickname, “Textilhof”. The Imperial Navy certainly spared no expense when constructing their clothing office in 1911. Designed as a symmetrical, three-winged complex with grand façades, the building resembles a castle. Inside, visitors are greeted by spacious stairwells and an abundance of natural light. The high ceilings and exceptionally large industrial windows create bright, airy spaces reminiscent of a New York loft. As part of the renovation and repurposing of this historic listed building, high-quality residential units have been created within the six-storey structure. The particular challenge lay in implementing the design specifications while meeting the necessary fire and noise protection requirements. Numerous individual details were developed and executed, such as a pitched-roof gable end, an eave along a fire wall, and a fireproof connection between the roof, wall, and loggia.
