Winner in the Non-Residential Category at the 13th Rigips Trophy
The new research institute, located in the Kassel train station area, comprises office spaces, laboratories and a variety of technical facilities, spanning a gross floor area of around 13,400 square metres. This gave rise to highly diverse requirements in terms of safety, flexibility and adaptability to future changes in use. The basic building concept optimised each structural unit for its specific use, bringing them together under a shared roof structure. Inside the building, a central entrance hall connects all four floors. Due to the variety of rooms and the required adaptability, almost the entire range of modern drywall construction techniques was utilised, including structures with strict fire protection and acoustic requirements, extremely load-bearing wall systems, and walls and ceilings that serve as design elements incorporating light integration. Okel GmbH & Co. handled the complete technical design, workshop planning, and execution. KG. A particular challenge was the"heart" of the foyer reception hall: a multi-storey, approximately 21-metre-high sound absorption wall tilted at around 6° from vertical to follow the set-back floor levels.
