Plan and build reliably with current sustainability data

New Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the RIGIPS Rigidur gypsum fibreboards recommended for healthy building

Gypsum fibreboards are now an essential component of many sustainable buildings. In addition to their unique material properties, such as high robustness and static load-bearing capacity, Rigidur gypsum fibreboards from RIGIPS are also recommended from a building biology perspective. A recently issued Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), based on the latest normative guidelines, emphasises the importance of this building material for ecological timber construction projects, for example.

The new EPD for Rigidur gypsum fibreboards from RIGIPS is valid retroactively from 30 August 2024 and will remain so until 30 August 2029. In addition to considering the use of 'green electricity' in the production process, the calculation of environmental impacts also took into account strict normative guidelines regarding planned waste during installation and the end of the product's lifecycle.

“According to DIN EN 15804 in combination with DIN EN 17328, which specifies requirements for gypsum products, the calculation of the GWP, or global warming potential of building materials in general, such as gypsum fiberboards and gypsum boards, must include a material waste rate of 5 percent during installation,” explains Kai Fricke, responsible product manager at RIGIPS. ”Furthermore, the effort involved in dismantling the material and its potential for recycling must now also be considered. Thanks to the recycling options offered as part of our EASY ECO initiative, we can provide our customers with an efficient solution.”

New EPD guarantees practical evaluation

As part of the EASY ECO initiative, RIGIPS offers its customers a range of services, including the return of pallets and packaging materials, the collection of construction site waste, and the return of materials after dismantling. The goal is to create fully closed material cycles. "By taking current normative guidelines into account, we are the only European manufacturer of gypsum fibreboards to offer a practical evaluation and reliable, factory-specific proof of low environmental impact in sustainably planned and implemented construction projects, as set out in the newly issued EPD." This ensures maximum security, even with regard to documentation requirements, for all current and future construction projects,” says Kai Fricke.

Tough and reliable – Rigidur is a solid choice

Rigidur gypsum fibreboards have long been recommended for modern interior construction in residential and non-residential buildings thanks to their material properties. Their high surface hardness makes walls constructed using dry construction methods resistant to impacts and scratches. Thanks to their exceptional surface quality, comparable to Q3, and their factory-applied primer, the boards provide an ideal base for subsequent coatings, even without full-surface jointing. Their exceptional stability also makes them an ideal building material for timber frame construction, as they can be used as load-bearing structural elements. The boards are also robust in terms of load-bearing capacity: shelves or cabinets can be mounted directly onto the wall without the need for special anchors. At the same time, all Rigidur gypsum fibreboards offer maximum safety in terms of preventive structural fire protection thanks to their non-combustibility.
