Earthquake-resistant construction with RIGIPS
General construction approval for the use of Rigidur H in earthquake‑prone regions in Germany
Earthquakes in Germany
Did you know that large earthquakes can occur in Germany? The map below shows the regions of Germany where earthquakes occur. North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg are the regions most affected, although earthquakes are also possible in parts of Bavaria and Thuringia.
Fortunately, collapsed buildings or destroyed cities are very rare. Furthermore, an earthquake does not necessarily result in severe damage, as it is possible to build earthquake-resistant structures. In Germany, DIN 4149 is a design standard that enables buildings to be constructed to withstand a defined design earthquake while retaining sufficient structural integrity.
Rigidur H – the gypsum fiberboard that can even withstand earthquakes
The general construction approval Z-9.1-898 is a certification document confirming that Rigidur H can be used unrestrictedly as the sole sheathing material for earthquake-proof constructions in Germany.
Timber construction, particularly the timber‑frame method, is an especially well-suited construction method for areas prone to earthquakes. The distinguishing feature of this method is that the load-bearing and bracing components can absorb earthquake forces and transform them into component deformation without collapsing. This behaviour is commonly referred to as energy dissipation.
It is comparatively easy to plan and verify an earthquake-resistant timber‑frame wall with Rigidur H. Provided that the earthquake forces are less than the bracing loads (for example, those caused by wind) and certain design aspects are taken into account, it is possible to demonstrate the wall's earthquake resistance.
Further Information
In Technik aktuell No. 70 “Earthquake Safety with Rigips,” the legal and normative basis for the design of earthquake-proof components is described. In addition to guidance for calculating load-bearing and bracing components in timber construction, constructive measures for the earthquake-resistant execution of non-load-bearing internal partition walls and suspended ceilings are also provided.
